College of New Jersey 3, Stockton 2 (penalty strokes)

Boxscore
The Stockton field hockey team nearly pulled off its second consecutive upset of a ranked opponent before succumbing to sixth-ranked College of New Jersey 3-2 on penalty strokes. The Lions outshot Stockton 39-4 and had a whopping 26-6 advantage in penalty corners, yet the game was decided by a best-of-five stroke-off in which TCNJ prevailed 2-1. Stockton goalkeeper Caitlin Nolan (Riverside/ Holy Cross) was under duress throughout the game but kept the Ospreys close with 26 saves.

TCNJ scored the only goal of the first half for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Samantha Horner (Newfield/Buena) scored at 45:24 on Stockton’s first shot on goal of the game to tie the match at 1-1. TCNJ quickly regained the lead on a marker 2:30 later for a 2-1 edge. Jen Jones (Hammonton/St. Joseph) tied the game again for the Ospreys with a successful penalty stroke at 57:38.

The teams then played to a scoreless draw for the rest of regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods. In the stroke-off, College of New Jersey was successful on two of its first three attempts while Stockton could convert only one of five strokes, off the stick of Aimee Rendine (West Milford/West Milford). The Ospreys’ upset bid fell short by the game final score of 3-2.
