Richard Stockton (13-13) was eliminated from the NJAC tournament 80-70 by Montclair State (16-9) in the first round. Aliyah Nelson (Pleasantville/St. Joseph) led a group of five double-digit scorers for Stockton with 14 points plus five steals and four assists. LaTonya Oliver (West Berlin/Overbrook) notched her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Che’Na Thompson (Salem/Salem) registered 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Ospreys, who were making their first NJAC playoff appearance since 2007. Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain) scored 11 points and Aspen Price-Perry (Lindenwold/ Lindenwold) added 10 points. Although the Ospreys never led in the game, they almost rallied from a 14-point deficit. Montclair State opened up a 40-26 lead before Stockton scored the last four points of the first half on a basket by Price-Perry and two free throws by Nelson to pull within 40-30 at intermission. Montclair led by 14 again in the second half, but Nelson scored five points during a 14-3 run that pulled the Ospreys within 52-49. After two Montclair free throws, Fagan sank a layup that closed the gap to three again at 54-51 before the Red Hawks used a 9-1 spurt to increase their lead to 63-52. After the teams exchanged free throws, Stockton made one final charge by scoring seven unanswered points to cut Montclair’s edge to just 64-60 after another layup by Fagan with 6:15 to play. The Ospreys scored just two points in the next 2:30, and they could not overtake Montclair in the 80-70 defeat. At 13-13, the Ospreys are eligible for an ECAC tournament berth when the bracket in announced on March 1. |
