Stockton 42, Rutgers-Camden 29

Richard Stockton (4-1, 1-0 NJAC) opened NJAC play with a 42-29 victory at Rutgers-Camden (2-3, 0-1) in a low-scoring contest in which both teams shot under 33 percent from the floor. LaTonya Oliver (West Berlin/Overbrook) paced the Ospreys with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Che’Na Thompson (Salem/Salem) also tossed in nine points followed by Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain) with eight markers and five boards.

After an early 4-4 tie, Stockton took the lead for good on a free throw by Thompson that began a 5-0 run. The margin reached double figures when Daimis Ortiz (Mays Landing/ Oakcrest) drained a three-pointer for a 20-10 advantage with 2:29 on the clock.

After leading by as much as 13, the Ospreys settled for a 27-17 lead at the break. Oliver led all players with seven first-half points and Stockton capitalized on 15 Rutgers-Camden turnovers to build a 10-point cushion.

Stockton kept a comfortable lead as both teams struggled to score in the second half. The Ospreys went just 5-24 (20.8%) from the field, but still outdid Rutgers-Camden, who shot only 4-24 (16.7%) as the teams combined for just 27 points after intermission. Thompson scored consecutive baskets to give Stockton a 35-20 lead with 9:33 to play and the Ospreys led by at least eight points for the rest of the game to win the conference opener 42-29.
