Stockton 4, Rutgers-Camden 3

Richard Stockton (17-12, 3-8 NJAC) edged Rutgers-Camden (10-17, 1-10) 4-3 in an NJAC game that came down to the final out. In the bottom of the ninth, Gerard Heininger (Jackson/ Jackson Liberty) threw out the potential tying run at home for the last out of the contest.

Shawn Kessler (Bayville/Central Regional) and Travis Marra (Toms River/TR East) each went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Dan McGuckin (Sicklerville/Winslow Twp.) and Jason Gordon (Brick Twp./Brick Memorial) also contributed two hits apiece.

The Ospreys erased a 1-0 deficit in the fifth inning as Marra collected an RBI with a groundout that scored Mike Ficarro (Elmira, NY/Elmira) who had led off with a double. Stockton took the lead in the sixth frame on a two-run single by Mike Bush (Manahawkin/ Southern). Kessler produced an RBI single in the seventh inning to score Marra and give the Ospreys a 4-1 advantage.

Rutgers-Camden tallied single runs in the seventh and eighth frames to pull within 4-3. Two runners reached base for the Scarlet Raptors in the bottom of the ninth, but Heininger’s clutch throw to the plate cut down a Rutgers-Camden pinch-runner for the final out of the 4-3 Stockton victory.

Adam Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) pitched 6.1 innings for the win, improving his record to 5-2 on the season. Warburton allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and John Lightbody (Toms River/TR East) later tossed 1.1 scoreless innings for his league-leading 12th save.
