Stockton Gets Past Neumann in Overtime |
||
Sophomore transfer Pat Rafferty (Brick/Christian Brothers Academy) made his first game in a Richard Stockton uniform a memorable one as he scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel the Ospreys (1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Neumann (0-1). Sophomore Anthony Pira (Freehold/ Freehold) scored his first career goal for Stockton as well. Neumann, the first of eight 2010 NCAA Tournament teams that Stockton will face this season, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Andrew Leissing 21:55 into the match. The Ospreys responded at 35:53 as Pira scored with an assist by Brian Thomsen (Brick/Msgr. Donovan) for a 1-1 tie. The game remained deadlocked for the rest of regulation, a span of over 54 minutes, and overtime ensued. Stockton wasted little time in the extra session as two players who were making their debuts as Ospreys combined for the game-winner. Just 4:17 into the period, Rafferty scored on the only shot by either team in overtime and Ben Gery (South Dennis/ Wildwood Catholic) registered the assist on the play that gave Stockton the 2-1 triumph. Ospreys’ goalkeeper Tim Brett (Palmyra/Palmyra), the 2010 NJAC Rookie of the Year, earned the victory with four saves. Neumann goalie Bob Mastrillo countered with three stops for the Knights. |
