STOCKTON UPSETS #2 LYNCHBURG 1-0 |
||
Richard Stockton (2-1) played its third game in three days and upset Lynchburg (1-1), which is ranked second in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, 1-0 at the Roanoke Invitational. Pat Rafferty (Brick/Christian Brothers Academy) scored an early goal and Stockton earned its first shutout of the season in a defensive battle in which the teams combined for just 11 shots. Rafferty scored the only goal of the match, his second of the season, just 10:41 after the opening kickoff. Rafferty’s tally was assisted by Sal Pistone (Blackwood/Highland) and came on a Stockton corner kick. The goal also was scored on Stockton’s first shot of the game. Lynchburg, the 2010 NCAA runner-up, outshot the Ospreys 7-4 in the contest, but Stockton goalie Tim Brett (Palmyra/Palmyra) stopped all six shots on goal for his first shutout of the season. The Ospreys also played the final 22 minutes with a man-advantage after Lynchburg’s Jordan Clark received his second yellow card of the game and was ejected. |
