STOCKTON DUMPS MEDGAR EVERS 76-70

Richard Stockton (5-5) evened its overall record with a 76-70 victory over Medgar Evers (8-4) in the first round of the Albright Holiday Tournament.

The Ospreys shot 63% in the second half to prevail in a close game that included 15 lead changes and 11 ties. DiAndre Brown (Sicklerville/Camden Co. Tech) and Darnell McCargo (Woodlynne/Collingswood) led Stockton with 17 points apiece.

Kevin Johnson (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) contributed 12 points for the Ospreys to help coach Gerry Matthews collect his 498th career win. Winston Douglas led all scorers with 28 points for Medgar Evers while teammate Jarrel Deare tossed in 19 points.

Both teams had difficulty at the offensive end in the first half. Medgar Evers shot just 27.3% and Stockton was slightly better at 32.1% as the teams battled to a fitting 30-30 tie. Winston led all players with 14 points for Medgar Evers and Brown countered with 11 points.

Medgar Evers broke out to an eight-point lead twice in the second half and held a 57-50 advantage with 7:27 to play. Dave Williams (Pennsauken/Pennsauken) then scored the first five points of a 9-0 run that put Stockton on top 59-57 with 5:02 on the clock.

The game was tied four more times in the next 3:30 before Johnson gave the Ospreys the lead for good with a clutch three-pointer that made it 71-68 at the one-minute mark. MaCargo followed with a steal and layup, and Stockton went 3-4 at the line in the last 21 seconds to clinch the Ospreys’ fourth win in their last five games, 76-70.
