Richard Stockton (20-8) reached the 20-win mark for the 14th time under head coach Gerry Matthews with an 85-73 win over Medger Evers (17-12) in the opening round of the ECAC Metro Tournament.

The Ospreys placed four players in double figures and had 23 assists on their 35 baskets for the game. Darnell McCargo (Woodlynne/Collingswood) set a career high with 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Stockton.

Bill McDonough (Spring Lake/St. Rose) chipped in with 17 points while Rich Suhr (Toms River/Toms River East) scored 15 including three three-pointers.

DiAndre Brown (Sicklerville/Camden County Tech) added 13 more points and a career-high six assists to the Osprey total. Ibn Moye (Toms River/Central Regional) dished out a career-high seven assists.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead to start the game, but Stockton righted the ship and fashioned 33-18 advantage on a 22-3 run. McDonough accounted for seven of those points and finished with 10 in the half to spark the Ospreys to a 41-24 lead at the break.

Both teams provided some excitement in the second half. Medgar Evers ran off the first 15 points to close within two at 41-39 before the Ospreys answered with 17 consecutive counters to regain a commanding lead at 58-41 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

McCargo led the onslaught with six points while Brown and McDonough added four apiece. Stockton then held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game and won 85-73. The victory gave Gerry Matthews 513 career wins, one shy of the New Jersey college basketball record of 514 by Princeton's Pete Carril.

Brian Johnson scored a game-high 24 points for Medgar Evers while teammates Winston Douglas and Jovan Deare added 17 and 15 points respectively.
