Gage Mick (Bridgeton/Cumberland) pitched a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as Richard Stockton (15-8, 3-1 NJAC) defeated Rutgers-Newark (12-10, 2-2) for the second straight day, this time by a 4-0 score. The victory was the third in a row for the Ospreys. Offensively, Marc Asta (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) led Stockton by going 2-3 with a run and an RBI while Travis Marra (Toms River/TR East) was 2-4 with a run scored. Eight Ospreys registered at least one hit in the game. Stockton scored twice in the second inning for an early 2-0 lead. Dan McGuckin (Sicklerville/Winslow Twp.) extended his hitting streak to seven games with a leadoff single and scored on an RBI single by Asta. Two batters later, Asta scored on an RBI double by Shawn Kessler (Bayville/Central Regional). The Ospreys extended their lead to 4-0 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles by Mike Ficarro (Elmira/Elmira) and Mike Wasco (Riverside/Riverside) respectively. Mick walked just one batter and did not allow any runners beyond second base on the way to his first career shutout. Five Rutgers-Newark players registered one hit apiece, with a ninth-inning double by Owen Harshaney the only extra-base knock by the Scarlet Raiders. Connor Medler absorbed the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. |
