The Stockton women’s tennis team took to the courts with a revamped lineup during the fall 2011 season as everyone on the roster was in either their first or second year on the squad. After some early struggles, the Ospreys finished the fall with a 6-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in NJAC matches that was good for third place in the league. In addition, head coach Phil Birnbaum reached a milestone, picking up his 100th career victory at Stockton on October 8. Freshman Sam Koropchak led the Ospreys in singles wins with seven, and she was named NJAC Rookie of the Week twice during the season. Seniors Brittany Hall and Jaclyn Britton plus freshman Scout Bauer won six matches apiece in singles play. Hall garnered an NJAC Player of the Week honor on October 11. Britton and Bauer each posted team-best 4-2 records in NJAC matches.
Stockton got the season off to a solid start by sandwiching wins over Georgian Court and Manhattanville around a defeat to perennial NJAC champion College of New Jersey. After a pair of defeats, the Ospreys competed in the Goucher Invitational, where Bendijo, Hall, Bauer and the doubles team of Britton/Portner all reached the semifinals. After the tournament, Stockton reeled off four consecutive victories, all against NJAC opponents. The highlight of the winning streak came on October 8 when the Ospreys topped Kean 6-3 to give Birnbaum, the only coach in the program’s 11-year history, career victory number 100. The fall season wrapped with a loss to Cabrini that halted the win streak, but Stockton will be back in action in the spring with its southern trip and possibly some matches in New Jersey as well.
