LATONYA OLIVER & MARC ASTA COLLECT NJAC ROOKIE HONORS

Richard Stockton freshman center LaTonya Oliver (West Berlin/ Overbrook) was named the NJAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week and freshman second baseman Marc Asta (Jackson/Jackson) was chosen the NJAC Baseball Rookie of the Week. Oliver earned the rookie hoops nod for the fourth time this year while Asta was the initial NJAC baseball rookie honoree of the season.

Oliver closed out a solid freshman campaign with a pair of double-doubles in Stockton’s final two games. The six-foot center tallied 14 points and a career-high 18 rebounds against Cabrini on February 16. Oliver then followed with game highs of 19 points and 13 boards in leading Stockton to a season-ending 72-64 win over Rutgers-Camden on February 18. She led the Ospreys in scoring (11.9 ppg), rebounds (8.8 rpg) and blocks (1.38) during her rookie year.

Asta got his college career off to a fast start with a .667 batting average (6-9) plus 10 RBI and eight runs as Stockton opened the 2009 season by winning two of three games in Myrtle Beach. On Saturday, he went 1-2 with two runs in an 18-3 win over Bates and then 1-2 with a double and two RBI against Alma. Asta then led Stockton to a wild 29-28 victory over Capital on Sunday by going 4-5 with a double, triple, two home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored.
