SCOTT FISHER NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM

Richard Stockton designated hitter Scott Fisher (Toms River/TR East) was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Baseball First Team. Fisher became Stockton’s first Academic All-American in baseball and fifth overall. The lefty slugger is a visual communications major at Stockton with a 3.43 grade point average.

Fisher started all 32 games for the Ospreys, who went 15-17 in 2009. The senior led the NJAC in slugging percentage (.876) and tied for the league lead in home runs (school-record 12). Fisher also ranked second in the conference in batting average (.446) and on-base percentage (.542) as well as sixth in RBI (47) and tied for sixth in doubles (school-record 16). On a larger scale, he was seventh in the nation in slugging percentage and ninth in home runs per game (0.38).

Although Fisher earned Academic All-America honors as a DH, he also pitched a team-high 45.1 innings in seven starts on the mound. The righty hurler went 3-3 and led Stockton with a 3.97 ERA and 48 strikeouts, a total that tied him for sixth in the NJAC.

Fisher amassed numerous postseason honors for his efforts, highlighted by his selection to the ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic Region First Team for the second consecutive year. He also was named to the NJAC All-Conference First Team and chosen as an ECAC Metro First Team All-Star. Fisher was voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team earlier this month for his work in the classroom.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams are chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). The College Division consists of NCAA Division II, III and NAIA institutions. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher and have reached at least sophomore academic standing.
