MELISSA BAUMGARTNER NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA SOFTBALL TEAM |
Richard Stockton senior designated player Melissa Baumgartner (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Softball Third Team. Baumgartner, who batted .270 in 37 games for the Ospreys this year, is a physical therapy major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She was the salutatorian of the Stockton class of 2009 and she will continue school in the College’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Academically, Baumgartner was a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II selection, including First Team honors twice. She also earned NJAC All-Academic Team and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete honors three times apiece. Baumgartner became the Stockton’s softball program’s second consecutive Academic All-American, joining 2008 recipient Barb Kutch. Baumgartner started 34 games and helped the Ospreys tied the school record with 27 victories as they finished with a 27-15 record in 2009. Although she mostly served as the designated player, the four-year letter winner also saw action at third base where she made just one error in 41 chances. In addition to her .270 batting average, Baumgartner notched three doubles, two triples, 18 RBI and 12 runs this season. She finished second on the team with 15 walks as well. The Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams are chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). The College Division consists of NCAA Division II, III and NAIA institutions. |
