Stockton’s research vessel (R/V) fleet includes four workboats powered by outboard engines ranging in size from 16-28'. Each vessel provides a platform geared toward specific teaching and research activities. Faculty and staff utilize these vessels as platforms from which to conduct their marine research and teaching activities. All vessels are maintained to standards set forth by the USCG and are designated as Oceanographic Research Vessels. All vessels are equipped with a minimum electronics package including DGPS chartplotter systems, depth sounders, and VHF communication. All vessels carry the appropriate safety gear aboard and are maintained by trained marine mechanics.

Stockton's hands-on science programs, specifically the marine science program, affords students the opportunity to spend considerable time on these research vessels, familiarizing themselves with working in the marine environment. There are ample opportunities through general coursework and independent research studies to learn proper sampling techniques and get a head start on skills required in many entry level positions and advanced education programs.
The Marine Science and Environmental Field Station is responsible for housing and maintaining the majority of the College's marine and environmental science field sampling equipment. The hands-on
teaching approach that exemplifies the science programs at Stockton offers considerable opportunities for students to become well trained on the use of standard and advanced equipment and instruments.
