 Welcome to our annual MLK, Jr. Day of Service project site!

We hope you find all the information you need about the projects taking place on our upcoming MLK, Jr. Day of Service. Please note that the project descriptions listed here were provided directly by the site coordinators. Stockton will not be providing transportation for Stockton or community volunteers (unless otherwise noted). The Alcove Center for Grieving Children and Families - Thrift Shop (Northfield)
Project: Volunteers will assist in cleaning/dusting the thrift store, washing windows, and steaming articles of clothing for sale. 
Required Skills: No skills required.
FYI: Dress appropriately for cleaning and dusting. 

 

Alzheimer's Association (on campus)
Project: Volunteers will make activity lap pillow for individuals with Alzheimer's or a related dementia.  Volunteers will be gluing/sewing items such as buttom, zipper, velcro, etc. to pillows.
Required Skills: No special skills required.

FYI: If able, volunteers are encouraged to bring old belts, buttons, shoelaces, old denim, sewing kits, or super glue.  The activity pillows will be donated to a long term care facility(s) or an adult day care center for their clients. 

 

African-American Heritage Museum (Newtonville)

Project: Volunteers will record in a computer file the collection of books stored in the museum officer, including a recent donation of 300 books.  Volunteers will also be organizing and taking inventory of the collections inside of the museum. 

Required Skills: Some volunteers will need basic computer skills, and all volunteers will beed to be able to describe and document the items being inventoried. 

FYI: The museum has 3 computers, but a few extra laptops on the day of the project would be very useful and most welcome. 

NOTE: For the time being, volunteers interested in this project should write "AAHM" in the comments section of the registration form.

 

The Arc of Atlantic County 
(Egg Harbor Twp.)

Project: Mural Painting.

Required Skills: Experience painting and creativity.

FYI: Wear clothes for painting.

 

AtlantiCare Kids (on campus, off College Drive)

Project: Volunteers will clean windows, wood trim, doors, walls, and steam clean carpets.  Volunteers will also organize closests and clean toys. 

Required Skills: No special skills required.

FYI: Wear something comfortable that you can get dirty.

 

Books without Borders (on campus)

Project: Volunteers will sort donated books and then pack and ship them to schools in developing countries.

Required Skills: Some ability to life boxes of books would be helpful.

 

Boxes of Love (on campus)

Project: We will be writing letters, sorting, packing and sealing up care packages for our military servicemen and women overseas.

Required Skills: Just a willingness to serve! Also, volunteers are welcome to bring donations to pack in the care packages - we need personal care items, non-perishable foods, hard candy and gum, new or used DVDs, CDs, books, magazines, etc. for both men and women, as well as monetary donations for shipping.

NOTE: For the time being, volunteers interested in this project should write "Boxes of Love" in the comments section of the registration form.

 

Caring Adult Medical Day Care - CARING Place (Pleasantville)

Project: Volunteers will work with the Activities Director in providing special programs to the elderly and adults with disabilities who attend the Adult Day Care Center. 

Required Skills: Prefer volunteers who are able to communicate and interact with the elderly and with adults who have disabilities.  Programs during the day include arts and crafts, bingo, exercise programs, special events with entertainers and parties, etc. 

FYI: If any of the volunteers have special talents such as singing, playing musical intruments, or even a special arts and crafts project, CARING Place could build the activity into the day's scheduled programing if notified in advance.  Volunteers should come to the program looking to have a good experience and a good time.  The seniors love having visitors. 

 

Caring Adult Medical Day Care - Boardwalk (Atlantic City)

Project: Volunteers will work with the Activities Director in providing special programs to the elderly and adults with disabilities who attend the Adult Day Care Center.

Circle K – Stockton Chapter (on campus)

Project 1: Making teddy bears to give to pediatric hospital patients.

Project 2: As part of Hugs & Hope, volunteers will make home-made cards to send to children in hospitals.
Project 3: Making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for the hungry (to be delivered to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission later that night).

Required Skills: Some creativity and a willingness to learn.  Live to Serve, Love to Serve!

 

Covenant House (Atlantic City)

Project: Paint walls throughout the Crisis Center and the emergency shelter for homeless youth, ages 17-21.
Required Skills: Some experience with painting is helpful, but not required. Be ready to work.

FYI: Wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty.

 

Family Service Association (Egg Harbor Twp.)

Project: Volunteers will help clean and paint the inside and outside of the facility (weather permitting). 

Required Skills: No skills required.

FYI: Volunteers should be dress appropriately for the weather and should be on time. 

 

Generations Adult Day Health Care (Somers Point)

Project: Volunteers will visit with older adults and do special activities, including arts & crafts and games, with them throughout the day.

Required Skills: Volunteers should be good with people, patient, and ready to have fun.

FYI: Dress appropriately.  This project involves working with older adults, some of whom have Alzheimer's or other dementia-related symptoms. 

 

Samaritan Hospice (on campus)

Project: Volunteers will be making Valentine’s and St. Patrick's Day decorations for hospice patients in assisted living facilities.

Required Skills: Just creativity!

 

Seashore Gardens (Galloway)

Project: Volunteers will visit with older adults, do arts and crafts projects, play games, etc.

Required Skills: Patience and good with people

 

Shores at Wesley Manor (Ocean City)

Project: Volunteers will interview selected residents of our senior care community for an article in the in-house newsletter. The articles will be short biographies, interests, special talents, etc.

Required Skills: Comfort with the older population, skills in writing.

 

South Shore Ministries Thrift Store (Pleasantville)

Project: Sorting clothing, straightening up the shop and displaying goods.

Required Skills: None
