Rachel Pruchno, Ph.D., University Professor, Endowed Professor of Gerontology, Director of Research, New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging UMDNJ-SOM.  Dr. Pruchno will describe her conceptualization of successful aging, examine how early influences as well as current behaviors and relationships affect successful aging, and explore whether and how neighborhood characteristics have an impact on successful aging.

CarFit at Stockton

A day of CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The CarFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community. At Stockton’s planned CarFit event, a team of trained technicians from Stockton’s Occupational Therapy and Gerontology Programs, led by Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy Kim Furphy, will work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety.  A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.  (Registration Required)

Hesburgh Lecture - Deciding to be Green Scholarly Research Lecture

Laura Carlson, PhD, Notre Dame Professor of Psychology. With the growing concern for the protection of the environment, we need to encourage more eco-friendly behavior. Carlson discusses how we can use psychology to explore our relationship with the environment, focusing on why and how we make everyday environmental decisions (e.g., recycling a can or using a reusable bottle).

Guided Autobiography Workshop

-       Monday May 17 & 24, June 7 &14 3:00pm-4:30 Stockton Campus, Pomona

Guided Autobiography helps individuals organize their life stories. Guided by trained instructor, Dr. Lisa Cox, participants are led through themes and priming questions that evoke memories of events once known but filed away and seemingly forgotten.  Based upon the The Birren Autobiographical Studies Program, dedicated to enriching the lives of adults through writing, sharing, and preserving their life stories and life experiences, participants will develop the basis for writing their autobiographies.  (Registration required)  Click here for press release.

Cookbook Workshop

Cookbooks are so much more than a collection of recipes.  They can be part autobiography, part memoir and all legacy - a means of capturing and communicating thoughts, ideals, values - the things that make up our lives. SCOSA is looking for a group of older adults that would like to participate in a cookbook project, sharing ideas and developing a collaborative work that can be published and used as a fundraising tool for SCOSA so that we can continue to bring you this type of educational programming.  Each participant will “share a story” and recipes and receive a copy of the published cookbook. Introduction to Tai Chi Chih  June 9, 16, 23 and 30 - 10:30am

A four week program designed to introduce students to twelve of the twenty movements that comprise the practice of T’ai Chi Chih, originated by American Justin Stone. This practice activates, circulates and balances the body’s internal energy to promote wellness in body, mind, and spirit. It can be performed by anyone regardless of age or physical condition. It requires no special clothing or equipment. (Requires advance registration and commitment to all four sessions.  Limited Capacity.)

This Program is designed to address three barriers toward the treatment of depression in older adults: 1) lack of education about depression, 2) limited access to information about mental health providers who take Medicare patients and 3) challenges associated with depressed individuals' willingness to follow through with referrals. The Depression Screening Program will address these barriers by organizing events in the community that target these high-risk groups. The events will include an information session, depression screening, and providing a list of mental health providers who treat Medicare patients. We will also make follow-up phone calls to determine if participants made an appointment, with support and encouragement to get professional help.
