| The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics encompasses degree programs in biochemistry/molecular biology, biology, chemistry, environmental studies, geology, marine science, mathematics and applied physics. The faculty has a strong interdisciplinary interest coupled with a commitment to maintaining the strengths and standards of the traditional academic disciplines. It offers a rigorous, student-centered curriculum with emphasis on teaching. As a result the better graduates in all science areas have a high success rate in acceptance to graduate and professional schools and in securing employment within their areas of study. The 1600-acre campus provides a natural laboratory for field activities; a 400-acre ecological reserve is set aside solely for this purpose. The Marine Science and Environmental Field Station provides an unmatched opportunity to work with the aquatic environment. The College's location in the Pinelands, similarly, provides an ideal laboratory for studying the natural environment. Few colleges can match the diversity of habitats and study areas available on the Stockton campus. The College has recently renovated, well-equipped science laboratories with a wide variety of instrumentation available for undergraduate instruction and research. An Arts and Sciences Building provides outstanding facilities for teaching and research in the biological, earth science, and public policy branches of the Environmental Science and Geology disciplines. Facilities which support science research and instruction at Stockton are a fully equipped marine science laboratory and an astronomical observatory. These facilities are used in class instruction as well as for advanced student projects. The breadth of interest of the faculty is reflected in the diversity of experiences offered to science majors and non-majors alike. The expertise of the science faculty is available to the community through many activities including the Jersey Shore Science Fair and outreach programs to local schools. |
