SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS (SLPS) and AUDIOLOGISTS work to prevent, diagnose, and treat disorders of communication. SLPs also assess and treat disorders of swallowing.
SLPs work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, private offices, and clients' homes. SLPs are certified through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). http://www.asha.org
Hearing and balance disorders can be assessed, treated, and rehabilitated by an audiologist. Audiologists also select, fit, and dispense amplification systems such as hearing aids; they prevent hearing loss through providing and fitting hearing protective devices, consultation on the effects of noise on hearing, and consumer education; and they can serve as expert witnesses in litigation related to their areas of expertise. Some audiologists conduct research on hearing, tinnitus, and the balance system. http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/
Audiologists are certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) http://www.asha.org or the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) http://www.audiology.org
Job opportunities are expected to continue to grow for SLPs and audiologists over the next eight years. http://www.asha.org/public/speech/
