Ms. Emma N. Byrne
Ms. Emma N. Byrne has been a member of the Board of Trustees at The Richard Stockton college of New Jersey since 2005.
She is the retired director of Corporate Communications and Federal Affairs for PSEG (Public Service Enterprise Group) of Newark, N.J. where she had responsibility for the federal legislative agenda of the company in addition to PSEG’s entire external and internal communication agenda as well as the corporate advertising and branding program.
Byrne joined PSEG in 1997 following nearly four years as state director for U.S. Senator Bill Bradley. Early in 1999, she was allowed a leave of absence by PSEG to join the Bradley for President Campaign as a senior advisor. She returned to PSEG in April 2000 following 13 months with the campaign.
She served in the administration of Governor Jim Florio from January 1990 to May 1993 first as press secretary to the Governor, the first woman to hold that position and then as director of the N.J. Division of Consumer Affairs. The Division oversees the Office of Consumer Protection, the Bureau of Securities and 33 professional and occupational licensing boards that govern nearly a half million professionals in the state. Under her leadership, the Division launched major investigations into frauds involving home and auto repair, health care professionals, fraudulent environmental marketing, consumer privacy issues, telemarketing schemes targeting the elderly and authored New Jersey’s current charities reform law.
She is a graduate of the College of Saint Elizabeth where she received an A.B. in History and served as a member of the College Board of Trustees and president of the Alumnae Association.
She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and of the UMDNJ Dental School Foundation, was a founding board member of Gilda’s Club of North Jersey and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Community Health Law Project and Babyland Family Services of Newark. In June 2004, she was named “PR Professional of the Year” by the N.J. chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
Emma and her husband, Paul, reside in Manasquan and have two children, Courtney Byrne Trent, of Rumson, and P.J. (Paul Jeffrey) of Los Angeles as well as two grandchildren.
