The Stockton women’s soccer team yielded a late goal that resulted in a season-opening 3-2 loss to Roanoke.  Courtney Dougherty (Ocean City/Ocean City) and freshman Shelley Gibney (Shamong/Seneca) each scored one goal for the Ospreys.  Stockton goalkeeper Alex Rogers (Medford/Shawnee) registered six saves in the game.  Stockton was outshot 30-8 overall, yet fought back to tie the match twice before falling one-goal short.

Roanoke took an early 1-0 lead just 2:43 into the game, but Dougherty quickly knotted the match at 1-1 less than three minutes later.  Roanoke went ahead 2-1 at 21:37 and the Ospreys faced the one goal deficit at halftime.  In the second half, Gibney pulled Stockton into a 2-2 tie by scoring her first career goal, assisted by Laura O’Shea (Petersburg/Ocean City), at 63:18.  The contest remained deadlocked until Roanoke tallied the game-winner with just 2:30 on the clock to deal Stockton the 3-2 defeat.
