VIDEO: 2012 Season Preview with Head Coach Marty Kavanagh

The 2012 Stockton baseball team won 21 games for the second straight season, marking the fifth time in the past six years that the Ospreys reached the 20-win plateau. Along with the victories came a third straight ECAC tournament invitation for head coach Marty Kavanagh and a nucleus of veterans that included nine seniors and seven juniors.

Led by senior Mike Wasco, the Ospreys proved they were a force to be reckoned with. Wasco hit a team-high .357 and led the team with two triples, four home runs and 38 RBI on the way to an NJAC Honorable Mention nod. He finished his sterling career with 146 hits (eighth all-time at Stockton), 28 doubles (sixth all-time), 15 homers (third all-time) and 112 RBI (second all-time), placing him among the leaders in Stockton baseball history. In addition, Wasco’s 102 career walks are a school record.

Fellow seniors Dan McGuckin and Marc Asta also were chosen NJAC Honorable Mention and placed themselves among the all-time leaders in the Osprey record book. For the season, McGuckin batted .338 with 22 runs and 20 RBI while Asta hit .306 with 20 RBI and 15 runs. McGuckin’s 154 career hits rank him fifth all-time plus his 24 doubles are tied for seventh in Stockton baseball history. Asta placed himself in the program’s top 10 with 129 hits (10th), 80 RBI (seventh) and seven triples (tied-third).

Barry Larro produced a superb season from the leadoff spot as he led the squad with 37 runs, nine doubles and 28 walks in addition to a .304 batting average. Justin Gordon finished second on the team only to Larro with 27 runs and seven doubles while batting .321 with 19 RBI. Senior catcher Nick Scalise ended his career at Stockton by leading the NJAC with 12 sacrifice bunts and totaling 19 runs and 18 RBI.

On the hill, Gage Mick produced a brilliant season, leading the team with five wins and 51 strikeouts while adding two saves, one shutout and a tight 2.55 ERA. Senior Bryan Frank completed his final campaign at Stockton by tying Mick with five victories including his first career shutout. Frank’s 33 appearances in an Osprey uniform tie him for seventh in school history. Mark Crescenzi posted a superb 2.95 ERA and picked up two wins along with two saves while fanning 46 hitters. Drew Holt contributed four victories, 41 whiffs and a 3.03 ERA as well.

Stockton got off to a slow 3-4 start before hitting its stride with a season-high eight-game winning streak during which the Ospreys averaged 9.75 runs per game. After winning just one of its next five games, Stockton broke the slump with three straight NJAC victories. Conference play got the best of the Ospreys after that as they went 3-7 in their next 10 league games before splitting their last four to end the regular season. Stockton received an ECAC tournament berth and topped Mount St. Mary 6-2 in the first round before falling to Stevens 3-2 and finishing with a 21-18 record.
