Asta Named NJAC Rookie of the WeekFisher Named Stockton Male Athlete of the Year Four Players Named NJAC All-Conference Fisher Named to Academic All-District II First Team Fisher Named to ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team Fisher Named to Academic All-America First Team Fisher Chosen ECAC Metro All-Star Five Players Receive NJCBA Postseason Honors The Stockton baseball team battled through a rebuilding year in 2009 with a roster that featured 17 newcomers, including 15 freshmen, and just eight returnees. Several of the new players assumed important roles and made significant contributions to the team’s success. Although Stockton possessed limited depth and a young pitching staff, the Ospreys nearly posted their third consecutive winning season before falling just short with a 15-17 record in a campaign that saw six games cancelled and several more rescheduled due to inclement weather. Scott Fisher once again led Stockton with his bat and arm as the top hitter and pitcher for the Ospreys, topping the team in nearly every major offensive and pitching category. The lefty batter hit .446 with school records of 16 doubles and 12 home runs plus 47 RBI and 42 runs. Fisher also paced the pitching staff with a 3-3 record, 48 strikeouts and a 3.97 ERA in 45.1 innings pitched. He was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic Region First Team for the second consecutive year. Fisher also became the Stockton baseball program’s first Academic All-American and was selected to the NJAC First Team and ECAC Metro First Team. Matt Allen blossomed offensively, hitting .374 with four home runs and 26 RBI while Matt Hunt batted .370 with nine doubles and 20 RBI. Marc Asta led the newcomers with a stellar freshman season in which he hit .423 with 33 runs, 29 RBI and five homers. Transfer Jay Merulla also made an impact with a .373 average plus seven doubles, 16 runs and 14 RBI for the Ospreys. Rookie hurler Chris LaVoie went 4-2 with 33 strikeouts and a 4.31 ERA as well. Allen and Asta were voted to the NJAC Second Team while Merulla earned an NJAC Honorable Mention nod. Asta also collected one NJAC Rookie of the Week award during the season.Stockton began the season by winning two of its first three games, including a wild 29-28 victory over Capital, during its opening weekend. The Ospreys excelled in Cocoa Beach with an 8-2 record during their week-long stay. The highlight of the trip was a 10-8 victory over second-ranked Salisbury as part of a winning streak that reached six games after Stockton routed Drew 19-4 in its first game back after spring break. The difficult NJAC slate of games battered the young squad as the Ospreys won just twice in their next seven contests, a 6-3 win over Rutgers-Camden and a 5-3 triumph over Ramapo. A seven-game skid followed, including three defeats by just one run as Stockton fought hard but could not seem to prevail. The Ospreys finally broke through by ending a brutal stretch of six games in four days with a 12-6 win over Rutgers-Newark. Next, Stockton provided one final highlight with a 7-6 victory over Rowan in which the Ospreys tied the game on a ninth-inning homer by Nick Scalise and won it on a walk-off single by Chris Wedding in the 10th frame.
