Megan Irving

Boxscore

Richard Stockton (1-1) nearly fought back from a three-goal deficit but could not get any closer as Wesley College (1-0) gave the Ospreys their first loss of the season, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines scored twice in the first half as Madison Leone and Brittany Blacksten hit the back of the net, giving Wesley a 2-0 lead at the break. Sheree Pleasanton assisted on Leone’s tally while Tristin Burris had the helper on Blacksten’s goal. Blacksten scored just three seconds left before the horn.

Leone opened the scoring in the second stanza, again from Pleasanton, for a 3-0 lead before Stockton made their run. Megan Irving (Oaklyn/Collingswood) and Nancy White (Ocean City/Ocean City) scored just 2:27 apart to get the Ospreys within one at 3-2. Alicia Leadbeater (Franklinville/Delsea) assisted on both goals. Irving, a sophomore, tallied the first goal of her career.

The Wolverines put the game away as they netted two late goals 40 seconds apart while up a man due to a yellow card to make the final 5-2. Burris and Abigail Hill got the goals and both were unassisted scores.

Elizabeth Groom earned the win making eight saves. Teammate Amanda Hudson kicked out three shots in 19 minutes. Liz Stankiewicz (Freehold Twp. /Freehold twp.) suffered the loss, saving three shots. She was briefly relieved in net by Taylor Snyder (Marlton/ Cherokee) who made one save in 14:46.
