STOCKTON SPLITS SEASON-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER

Drew Holt

Game 1 / Game 2

Richard Stockton opened the 2012 season by splitting a doubleheader against Susquehanna in Myrtle Beach. The Ospreys won first game 3-0 but dropped the nightcap 7-4.

Barry Larro (Cedarville/Cumberland) led the offense in the opener, going 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Nick Scalise (Northfield/Mainland) went 2-2 with a triple, run and an RBI.

Pitcher Drew Holt (Toms River/TR South) earned the win with 6.1 scoreless innings in which he allowed seven hits and fanned six. Gage Mick (Bridgeton/Cumberland) retired the last two batters for his first career save.

Larro doubled and scored on an RBI single by Justin Gordon (Brick/Brick Memorial) in the third inning. Scalise stroked an RBI single in the fourth frame and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Gerard Heininger (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) later in the inning as Stockton posted the 3-0 shutout.

Gordon and Mike Bush (Manahawkin/Southern) each went 2-3 with a run scored in the nightcap. The Ospreys broke on top with three runs on just one hit, an RBI single by Travis Marra (Toms River/TR East), in the first inning. Stockton also benefited from three walks and a hit batsman.

Bush singled, stole second and scored on an RBI hit by Gordon in the second inning to give the Ospreys a 4-0 advantage. Susquehanna rallied with one run in the fourth frame and three apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Stockton 7-4. The Ospreys squandered the lead by committing five errors in the final two innings that led to six unearned runs.
