The 2009 season was one that started strong but ended in tough defeats for Stockton. The Ospreys posted a 12-9-1 record and qualified for the ECAC Metro tournament but could not quite advance, losing in overtime in their first round matchup. The team had a seven-game winning streak early and a 9-1 record midway through the regular season but was unable hold the momentum down the stretch.
Individually, a number of Ospreys were honored with postseason awards as Rafael Duarte was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year. Duarte also was chosen NJAC All-Conference First Team and ECAC Metro First Team All-Star. He was joined on the NJAC First Team by Sean Nelson, who was an ECAC Metro Second Team All-Star as well. Sean McCallum made his fourth consecutive NJAC Second Team appearance, with Brennan Fitzsimmons joining him. Sal Pistone was named NJAC Honorable Mention for Stockton.
Duarte led the Ospreys in scoring for the second straight year with 12 goals despite missing four early games due to injury. Duarte also notched team highs of 27 points and four game-winning goals. McCallum and Butch Huff each tallied eight goals while Nelson led the team in assists with seven. Lou Herring, saw the bulk of the action in goal, registering four shutouts, 52 saves and a 1.44 goals against average. Anthony Pompei posted three shutouts, 30 saves and a 0.97 goals against average in nine games played.
The Ospreys started the season with a pair of wins by a combined 6-1 score before stumbling against NCAA Tournament participant Salisbury. The Ospreys responded with four consecutive shutout victories on their home field, kicking off a seven-game winning streak. Stockton was dominant at both ends of the field during the streak, outscoring its opponents 26-2 with five shutouts while tallying at least four goals in four of the seven victories. September drew to a close with Stockton at 9-1 overall and 3-0 in NJAC matches.
October began on a sour note as the Ospreys fell to Rowan 1-0 before responding with a 2-0 victory over Albright. Stockton then went 0-4-1 in the next five games with three losses by one goal, including two in overtime. The team responded with two consecutive victories but then lost 1-0 decisions to William Paterson and then to Rutgers-Newark, again in overtime, in the first round of the NJAC tournament. A 3-2 overtime defeat to Drew in the ECAC Metro tournament ended the Ospreys’ season. Overall, Stockton went only 1-4-1 in its six overtime games.
