VIDEO: 2011 Season Preview with Head Coach Jeff Haines

The 2011 season was one that started strong with Stockton winning five of their first six matches, and after some inconsistent play, the Ospreys finished with a flourish. They posted a late-season seven-game unbeaten streak that led up to an overtime defeat in the semifinals of the ECAC tournament. Stockton finished with a 12-7-4 overall record and a 3-3-2 mark in NJAC play.

On an individual basis, three Ospreys were honored with postseason awards. Senior back Sal Pistone was named to the NJAC All-Conference First Team for his outstanding play on the back line. Pistone helped the team post an outstanding 1.15 goals against average and nine shutouts. It was his second all-conference nod as he previously was named 2009 NJAC Honorable Mention. Pistone also was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on September 12.

Senior back Brennen Fitzsimmons and sophomore forward Pat Rafferty were selected as NJAC Second Team honorees. For Fitzsimmons, it was his third all-conference selection. He was named to the 2009 NJAC Second Team and earned NJAC Rookie of the Year and NJAC Honorable Mention kudos in 2008. Fitzsimmons was superb on defense again this season as he was throughout his career as a four-year starter. He added three goals offensively, one of which was the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark on October 26, shortly before he was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on October 31.

In Rafferty’s first year in an Osprey uniform after transferring from Babson College, he provided much of the scoring and was superb in the clutch. Rafferty started all 23 games and led the squad in scoring with 12 goals, including a team-high six game-winners. His 30 points tied him for fourth in the NJAC and his 12 tallies tied for fifth in the league. Rafferty also was chosen NJAC Offensive Player of the Week on October 10.

Ali Gocmez contributed five goals while Anthony Procopio chipped in with three goals and two assists. Senior Randy Kohr, a transfer from Rowan, and sophomore Anthony Pira solidified the defense in front of goalies Lou Herring and Tim Brett, who split time in the net. Brett notched four shutouts and a 0.89 goals against average in 12 starts while Herring posted three shutouts and a 1.17 GAA in 11 starts between the posts.

The Ospreys began the season on a high note with the highlight coming on September 3 when Rafferty’s goal on an assist from Pistone gave the Ospreys a 1-0 upset of #2 Lynchburg at the Roanoke Invitational. The victory was one of two over ranked opponents.

Stockton later knocked off #21 Swarthmore 3-2 in double overtime three days after tying #17 Salisbury 1-1. Overall, the Ospreys played nine contests that went to overtime, nabbing three wins and tying four. Stockton also qualified for the NJAC tournament, but they were eliminated by Rowan in heartbreaking fashion as they fell 4-3 on penalty kicks after battling to a 0-0 tie.
