The Stockton women’s soccer team once again had another successful season in 2011. The Ospreys ended the year at 15-7-4 and extended their streak of 13 wins or more to six consecutive seasons. They finished on a high note that enabled the Ospreys to reach the finals of both the NJAC Tournament and the ECAC Metro tourney as they went 9-2-2 in the second half of the season.

For the second straight year, six players were honored with NJAC all-conference kudos for their outstanding play. Leading the way was junior midfielder Jess McQuillen who was named to the NJAC Second Team for the second consecutive year. McQuillen, who started all 26 games, scored nine times, placing second on the squad. She also led the team with six assists and four of her goals were game-winning tallies. McQuillen was voted to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third Team as well.

Five Ospreys were chosen as NJAC Honorable Mention selections. Senior back Ashley Battilana was selected to her third straight all-conference team. Battliana previously was a 2010 NJAC Honorable Mention pick and a 2009 NJAC Second Team selection. She started every game for which she was in uniform over the past four years, a total of 90 matches. Senior back Melissa Eiding made her second straight appearance on the NJAC all-conference squad after she was a 2010 NJAC Second Team pick. Battilana and Eiding helped the Stockton defense post a 1.10 goals against average and 11 shutouts, which tied for the most in the NJAC.

Sophomore midfielder Leah Braidi, sophomore back Lauren McCutcheon and sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Hinkle each earned all-conference honors for the first time with their NJAC Honorable Mention selections. Braidi recovered from a knee injury that cut her rookie year short after 10 games to score three goals this year, including one game-winning tally. Braidi also was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 First Team for her perfect 4.0 grade point average in Speech Pathology.

McCutcheon was a steady force on defense for Stockton who started all 26 games and also registered one assist this season. Hinkle had an outstanding year in goal, posting a superb 1.18 goals against average and seven shutouts. She also made 104 saves and played the most minutes of any goalkeeper in the nation.

The Ospreys saw the emergence of some other players that made the season a success as well. Sophomores Jessica Balnis, who led the team with 11 goals and 25 points, and Jacque Becker with five tallies helped balance the scoring on the frontline. Senior Briana DeStefano also hit the net five times while sophomore Samantha O’Donovan bolstered the defense in 19 starts for the Ospreys.

Stockton got off to a fast start with a five-game unbeaten streak highlighted by three consecutive shutouts. The Ospreys faced some adversity as they went just 2-5-1 in their next eight matches before righting the ship with a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2). The run was capped by a 4-3 upset of #21 Rowan in the NJAC semifinals. Although Stockton fell to TCNJ in the league championship game, the team received an ECAC tournament berth and posted two shutouts before falling to NYU and finishing as the tourney runner-up.
