Freshman Brennen Fitzsimmons (Neptune/Neptune) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Richard Stockton to a 1-0 victory over Widener in the first round of the Swarthmore Garnet Alumni Classic. Pat Tolomeo (Ocean City/Ocean City) registered an assist on the scoring play. Stockton goalkeeper Matt Hart (Dayton/South Brunswick) made two saves to collect the shutout in the season opener for the Ospreys. After 90 minutes of scoreless play in regulation, Stockton prevailed just 4:55 into overtime. Following a Widener foul, Tolomeo struck a free kick that bounced off the post. Fitzsimmons then pounced on the rebound and deposited the ball into the back of the net with a back heel shot to give the Ospreys the 1-0 victory in sudden-death overtime. The goal by Fitzsimmons was the first of his career, providing a dramatic finish to his first college game. |
