G. Larry James (1947-2008): Olympian, Educator, Visionary

Track & field legend and long-time Richard Stockton College administrator G. Larry James, 61, passed away yesterday afternoon at his home in Smithville, New Jersey after a lengthy battle with cancer.  James’ track career reached its pinnacle at the historic 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where he won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay and a silver in the 400-meter run.  Those achievements are the biggest highlights in a distinguished track & field career for which James, nicknamed “The Mighty Burner”, was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in December 2003.

James arrived at Stockton in 1972 and helped spur the College’s growth over 36 years while serving in such roles as coach, athletic director and dean.  He became the athletic director in 1980 and spearheaded the development of Stockton’s athletic program as the driving force behind such projects as construction of the $17 million Sports Center and steady expansion of the athletic department to its current total of 17 sports.

An Olympian, educator and visionary, James was a giant on the international track & field scene and a pillar of strength for Richard Stockton College who impacted countless lives worldwide.  Memorial services will be on Saturday, November 15th at 10 am at Victory First Presbyterian Deliverance Church, 1013 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ  08401.  In lieu of flowers, the James family suggests that well-wishers make a donation to the G. Larry James Legacy Fund.
