The Stockton men’s basketball team started off the 2011-12 season slowly with a 1-4 record before the Ospreys caught fire on the way to a 20-9 final mark. Stockton finished 12-1 in conference play on their way to the 14th 20-win season under head coach Gerry Matthews. Matthews earned his 500th career victory with an 83-60 rout of North Carolina Wesleyan on January 3 and now sits just one behind the New Jersey coaching record of 514 wins by Pete Carril of Princeton.

DiAndre Brown, the lone senior on the year’s squad, will be missed for his scoring and leadership. Brown led the Ospreys in scoring (14.7 ppg) and finished second on the team in rebounds (5.9 rpg), assists (1.7 apg), three-pointers (45) and field goal percentage (.458) as well as shooting 76.5% from the free throw line.

Brown, who played three seasons at Stockton after spending his freshman year at Eastern Nazarene (MA), reached a personal milestone on January 11 by scoring his 1,000th career point in Stockton’s 96-60 victory over Rutgers-Camden. He later was named to the NJAC First Team, NABC Atlantic District First Team and D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Second Team. Brown finished his four-year college career with 1,216 points and 609 rebounds.

Junior transfer Bill McDonough produced an outstanding first season in an Osprey uniform. The 6-foot-7 forward led the team in rebounding (9.1 rpg) and steals (1.4 spg), finishing second and eighth in the NJAC in those categories as well. McDonough scored 13.9 points per game, second on the squad, and also showed some range by hitting 16 three-pointers. He was named to the NJAC Second Team for his efforts.

Junior transfer Darnell McCargo finished the season strong and helped the Ospreys with his overall play. In 29 games, McCargo averaged 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 51.9% from the field, which ranked sixth in the NJAC. He was named NJAC Player of the Week on February 13. Point guard Kevin Johnson contributed at both ends of the floor by leading the team in assists (2.1 apg) and finishing second on the team in steals (1.3 spg) while also scoring 7.2 points per game.

The emergence of two guards helped the Ospreys in the backcourt with their long-range shooting. Sophomores Rich Suhr and Ibn Moye scored 9.3 and 8.4 points per game respectively, but it was their ability to shoot from behind the arc that helped Stockton stretch the floor. Suhr and Moye combined to hit 89 three-pointers, with Moye hitting at a league-leading 47.3% clip for the year.

Following the 1-4 start, Stockton won two of its next three before really taking off as winning streaks of five and seven games gave the Ospreys 12 victories in 13 contests. The team later won its last three regular season games to clinch the overall top seed for the NJAC tournament. Stockton edged Ramapo in double-overtime in the league semifinals before their quest for the NJAC championship fell short by just four points in the title game against William Paterson. The Ospreys received an ECAC tournament berth and reached the semifinals before the season came to an end.
