Thompson Earns Second NJAC Rookie of the Week Award The building process that began last season for the Stockton women’s basketball team continues this year. Youth is the buzzword for a Stockton squad that consists of eight freshman, six sophomores, three juniors and no seniors. Although the Ospreys will be very young, they appear to have upgraded their overall talent level from a year ago. Growing pains are inevitable, especially with a tough NJAC and non-league schedule, but Stockton is laying a solid foundation for success. Sophomore center LaTonya Oliver is one of the key building blocks for the Ospreys. The six-footer has the size to dominate in the paint. Although she was just a freshman, Oliver was the most impressive Stockton player last year. She led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks with 11.9 points, 8.8 boards and 1.4 blocks per game. Oliver earned the NJAC Rookie of the Week award four times and later was named NJAC All-Conference Honorable Mention. Junior forward Kristin Sciarrillo joins with Oliver to give Stockton a strong tandem of post players. Sciarrillo is a proven rebounder and opportunistic scorer who averaged 5.4 caroms per game, led the team with a .495 field goal percentage and went 12-15 (80%) at the free throw line last year. Sophomore point guard Aliyah Nelson completes Stockton’s trio of returning starters. Nelson assumed the starting role as the team’s floor general right from the start of her rookie year and ran the offense with a maturity that belied her youth. The lightning-quick lefty averaged 7.4 points and a team-high 2.7 assists per game for the Ospreys last season.
