The Stockton women’s basketball team improved its win total for the fourth consecutive season with an 18-12 record and finished the 2011-12 season with a flurry, winning the ECAC Metro championship in dominating fashion. The Ospreys swept through the tournament by defeating FDU-Florham 73-62, Stevens 75-43 and Rutgers-Newark 83-52 to secure the title.

Senior center LaTonya Oliver’s exceptional career came to a fitting conclusion as she was named the ECAC tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Oliver ended her career with numerous school records and impressive statistics. She broke her own season records for rebounds (306) and blocked shots (72) and now holds the all-time records for rebounds (988), blocks (198) and field goal percentage (.565). In addition to those numbers, Oliver scored 1,287 points, which ranks sixth all-time in Osprey history.

This season, Oliver led the nation and set a school record in field goal percentage (.610), topped the NJAC in blocked shots (2.4 bpg) and finished as one of just two players in the league to average a double-double (12.1 ppg/10.2 rpg). Her stellar career concluded with a fourth straight NJAC all-conference honor as she was named to the NJAC Second Team at the end of the season.

Freshman Brittany Muniz supported Oliver with a strong rookie year. Muniz was named NJAC Rookie of the Week twice during the campaign and ended the season leading the NJAC in three-pointers per game (1.7), tied for second in total three-pointers (43) and also sixth in the league in assist-turnover ratio (1.1). She finished her first season with averages of 9.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as well as shooting 79.7% (47-59) at the free throw line.

Sophomore Lauren Alwan and junior Che’Na Thompson each averaged double digits at 11.8 and 10 6 points per game respectively. Alwan and Thompson each pulled down a little over seven rebounds per game as well. Alwan also led the team and placed third in the NJAC in steals with 68, the sixth-best single-season total in Stockton history. She is quickly moving up the Stockton record book in that category.

Senior Aliyah Nelson also made her mark on the Osprey record book by finishing her career fourth all-time in steals (187) and seventh in assists (242). During her final season, Nelson led the team in assists (2.5 apg), sank 25 three-pointers and averaged 6.4 points per game. The Ospreys’ future looks bright as freshmen Kelsey Brown, Alex Nardoza and Jill Henderson plus junior transfer Sarah Gibbs were key components to Stockton’s ECAC title run this season.

The Ospreys got off to a great start with an early-season seven-game winning streak that brought them to 8-1 overall. During the streak, Oliver scored her 1,000th career point against Southwestern (TX) on November 27. Head coach Joe Fussner collected his 300th career win on January 16 with an 89-85 triumph over Hunter that came during a four-game win streak. Although the Ospreys went just 3-8 in their next 11 contests, Stockton turned things around and finished strong with its three-win march to the ECAC championship.
