The Stockton softball team blended a nucleus of veterans and an influx of newcomers into a recipe for success in 2009. The Ospreys tied the school record with 27 victories, finishing 27-15 overall and 8-10 in NJAC play. Although Stockton missed the NJAC playoffs by one game, the team earned its fourth ECAC tournament berth in the last five years and finished third in the seven-team field. The Ospreys also set team records for batting average (.338), runs (284), hits (387), RBI (248), stolen bases (80) and strikeouts by their pitching staff (260).

Samantha Horner capped her stellar career by earning NFCA East Region First Team and NJAC Honorable Mention nods after batting .457 with a school-record 47 runs plus 36 RBI, 10 doubles and 28 stolen bases in 29 attempts. Horner was named NJAC Player of the Week once, as was junior Kelly Dodd who tied the school record of 37 RBI and batted .306 with nine doubles and a team-high four home runs. Dodd was voted to the NJAC First Team and senior Lindsay Connell was selected to the NJAC Second Team. Connell had a career year, hitting .356 with seven doubles, 20 runs and 20 RBI.

Junior Kaitlyn Corica led the pitching staff by going 11-7 with 140 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA. Corica was chosen NJAC Pitcher of the Week once. Freshman Joey Afflitto paced Stockton’s rookie crop by batting .418 with school records of 59 hits and nine triples plus 40 runs and 25 RBI. Afflitto, a two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, collected NFCA East Region Second Team and NJAC Honorable Mention kudos. Freshman Katelyn Derewecki hit .316 with 30 runs and a team-high 16 walks while rookie hurler Jamie Gasko went 8-6 with 63 strikeouts and a 1.95 ERA.

Stockton began the season with a 7-3 record during its annual trip to Fort Myers. All three losses came in extra innings. A victory in the Florida finale sparked a seven-game winning streak that was the longest of the season. Although a 2-1 defeat to NJAC champ William Paterson ended the run, the Ospreys took the nightcap 4-3 and won their next two games for a 16-4 record through 20 contests. After a 5-6 stretch, Stockton strung together three straight NJAC victories, including a 2-1 win over Montclair State in a makeup game.

The Ospreys were unable to sustain the momentum as a season-high three consecutive losses followed before they won the regular season finale 4-2 at Rutgers-Camden. Stockton entered the ECAC tournament as the third seed and blanked Old Westbury 5-0 to advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket. After falling to Montclair State 7-3, the Ospreys stayed alive with an 11-4 victory over Kean before they were eliminated with another defeat by Montclair State and finished third in the ECAC tourney.
