VIDEO: 2012 Season Preview with Head Coach Val Julien

The Stockton softball team started the 2012 season with 13 of its 23 players being either freshmen or sophomores, and those youngsters blended with a solid nucleus of record-setting veterans. The combination drove the Ospreys to a 25-15 record that made it eight straight seasons for head coach Val Julien’s squad with at least 20 victories. The season included a 9-1 start in Fort Myers, Florida and ended with an ECAC tournament bid for the fifth consecutive year.

Stockton seniors rewrote numerous parts of the school record book in the culmination a great four-year run. Joey Afflitto, who hit .336 with a team-high 35 runs this year, broke the single-season mark for triples with 12 and added to her career record of 28. Afflitto also finished with all-time records for at-bats (549), hits (191) and home runs (16) as well as tied for first in runs (133). Her 106 RBI rank second on the Stockton career list and she also ranks third in stolen bases (44) and fourth in doubles (33).

Katelyn Derewecki rebounded after a slow start to finish with a .343 average plus 20 RBI and a team-high 20 walks. Derewecki ended her brilliant four-year campaign as the career leader in walks with 75 as well as third all-time in runs (79) and fourth in hits (137). Pitcher Jamie Gasko posted an 8-6 record with an outstanding 1.21 ERA, four shutouts and 73 strikeouts. Gasko ended her fantastic career with 30 wins (second all-time at Stockton), 224 strikeouts (fourth all-time) and a superb 1.89 career ERA (fourth all-time).

Sophomore Grace Long had a breakout year as she slammed eight home runs, setting the school mark and ranking fourth in the NJAC. Long’s 27 RBI and 10 doubles led the squad and she batted .359, finishing second on the team and ninth in the league. Long also placed third in the NJAC in slugging percentage (.667). Junior Jessica Goncalves, the lone Osprey to receive an NJAC all-conference honor, led the team with a .400 average that stood sixth in the league and swiped 15 bases on the way to an NJAC Second Team nod.

Sophomore Michelle Pietrocola led the pitching staff in wins (11), strikeouts (126) and shutouts (5) while also notching a 1.56 ERA as the ace. Freshman Brittany Ksiezopolski chipped in with a 5-3 record, 1.49 ERA, 48 strikeouts and three shutouts. Ksiezopolski also garnered one NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week award. Gasko, Ksiezopolski and Pietrocola all ranked in the top 10 of the NJAC in ERA while Pietrocola and Gasko were sixth and eighth respectively in strikeouts. In addition, the staff set school records for complete games (29), strikeouts (261) and shutouts (14).

Stockton marched through the month of March, piling up a 13-1 record with winning streaks of five and eight games against non-conference foes. The Ospreys’ fortunes turned with the calendar as they dropped three of their first four games in April before rebounding with three straight wins. The focus on NJAC play proved difficult as Stockton went just 4-9 in their next 13 games. The Ospreys closed the regular season with four consecutive wins before a two-week layoff produced rust that resulted in a pair of defeats in the ECAC Metro tournament to close the season with a 25-15 record.
