Future Richard Stockton College intercollegiate teams will have a slightly different look as the Office of Athletics & Recreation switches its trim color from red to Columbia blue effective immediately. Stockton’s primary colors will remain black and white, as they have been since the 1970’s. The Stockton athletics logo will remain the same in design, with only the background color changing from red to Columbia blue.

The Stockton teams will continue to wear their customary white (home) and black (road) uniforms and apparel, with the Columbia blue to be incorporated in the piping, lettering and numbers beginning this fall. The Stockton athletics website, Sports Center basketball court and signage all will be converted to the new color scheme as the summer progresses. The red trim color has been eliminated from use by the Stockton athletic department.

The change in trim color comes as an effort to create uniformity with the official Richard Stockton College seal that was approved in December 2003. The seal utilizes the Columbia blue color in keeping with the Stockton motto “An Environment for Excellence”. “We want to help build a strong identity for the College and we feel that bringing our logo in line with the college seal is a big step in that direction,” said Stockton athletic director Lonnie Folks.

The color switch also will make Stockton unique within the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Whereas league members Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden also combine red and black, Stockton will be the only NJAC school to pair black with light blue. Institutions such as Columbia University, Creighton University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Rhode Island also make use of Columbia blue in their color scheme.
