The 2009 Stockton season was highlighted by the performance of junior Abad Akhtar who reached new heights. Akhtar became just the second Stockton runner ever and first since 2002 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Competing in the NCAA meet capped an outstanding year in which Akhtar won three races, earned All-Atlantic Region honors by placing 16th at the regional meet and collected a league-high five NJAC Runner of the Week awards. With Akhtar leading the way, Stockton won the Osprey Open and finished third at the Delaware Valley Invitational.
Freshman Matt Ardelean was the top newcomer for the Ospreys. Ardelean posted two top-ten finishes, earned NJAC Rookie of the Week honors twice and clinched a spot on the NJAC All-Conference Second Team by placing 11th at the conference meet. Sophomore Jim Codianni also captured an NJAC Second Team nod with a 12th-place finish at the NJAC Championships. Codianni consistently was one of Stockton’s top runners, peaking with a third-place finish in the Osprey Open.
The Stockton men’s team also received solid contributions from freshman Randy Faiges and sophomore Nate George who were scoring runners in seven meets apiece for the Ospreys. Freshman Alex Bruno was limited to just three meets in October but showed a glimpse of his ability by finishing among Stockton’s top five each time.
Junior Robyn Evangelist and senior Meredith Malloy led the Stockton women’s team to a strong 2009 season. Malloy and Evangelist both earned spots on the NJAC All-Conference First Team by placing fifth and sixth respectively at the league meet. Overall, Evangelist registered five top-ten finishes while Malloy finished among the top ten at four meets. The pair of veterans led Stockton to victory in the NJAIAW Championships, second place at CTC Championships and third place in the NJAC Championships and Delaware Invitational.
Junior Katherine Rudy and a trio of newcomers ran well in support of Evangelist and Malloy. Rudy was a scoring runner at six meets, including a season-best ninth place in the NJAIAW Championship. Freshman Nicole Salge finished among Stockton’s top five in five races and earned NJAC Rookie of the Week honors once. Junior transfer Jill Leaness and freshman Emily Capille placed high enough to score for the Ospreys at four meets apiece, with Leaness posting one top-ten finish in the NJAIAW Championship.
