WHAT'S NEW!

Stockton College Men's Basketball Team Completed Most Successful Season in College History!

The Ospreys reached the Final Four for the second time in College history and for the first time since 1987. Sixth-ranked Richard Stockton’s (30-3) magical season ended with a 61-52 loss to second-ranked Washington University (St. Louis) (29-2) in the NCAA championship game. Santini Lancioni (Runnemede/Paul VI) led Stockton with 19 points and Michael Farrow (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) tallied nine points and a team-high seven boards. Farrow was named to the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Final Four. Despite the loss, the Ospreys finished as the NCAA runner-up for the first time ever. The next day the Ospreys returned to the Stockton College Sports Center with an extraordinary homecoming, Stockton fans cheering for the men as they stepped foot off the bus.

While a national championship wasn't considered at the start of the year, feelings changed along the way. As the season progressed, the Ospreys kept winning. They beat the best teams in the region and won their second straight New Jersey Athletic Conference title.

"If you said to me at the beginning of the year we'll play in the national championship and go 30-3, I wouldn't have believed you," Stockton senior Jerome Hubbard said. "It shows a lot about our team and how we fought hard every game. We were the underdog in a few games, and we still dug it out and won. Even in this game, we dug ourselves a hole and we still didn't give up."

Stockton finished its best season ever with a school-record 30 victories. Along the way, the Ospreys repeated as the NJAC champion, strung together an 18-game winning streak and reached the NCAA championship game for the first time.

"People didn't think we could win the NJAC, never mind getting here," Hubbard said. "Hopefully (next season) nothing will change."

GREEN SPOTLIGHT: Earth Hour 2009

Earth Hour 2009: A Message from President Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr.
Dear Richard Stockton College Community,

As part of Stockton’s ongoing commitment to the principles of sustainability, the College is endorsing and participating in this year’s Earth Hour world-wide event. Earth Hour began in 2007 as a way to bring to the public’s attention the importance of sustainable practices and how each person can make a difference in addressing climate change and global warming.

Sydney Australia was the first city to participate in Earth Hour, with 2.2 million homes and businesses switching off their power for one hour. In 2008, the event expanded to include cities from Rome, Italy to San Francisco and included 50 million participates. So far this year nearly 1,700 cities, towns and municipalities – covering 80 nations worldwide and millions of individuals and organizations have signed on to participate in this year’s event, to be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Stockton will participate by turning off non essential power on campus during the designated hour. We’ve adopted the title of "New Jersey’s Green College" because it reflects our promise to be a steward of the environment. I encourage you to join us by participating in your own home. Simply turn off the lights in your home during the designated hour. By doing so, you will join the world community in sending a message to our leaders that you care about finding solutions to climate change.

For more information on Earth Hour, how to register, and even some fun tips on activities you and your family can do during that hour, go to http://www.earthhour.org/. I also encourage you to view the College’s “New Jersey Green College” link at www.stockton.edu/green to learn more about Stockton’s sustainability initiatives.

Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr.
President
