What's going on in Counseling Services?
_______________________________________________________________________
Counseling Services provides free, short-term confidential counseling and referral services to Stockton students. Counseling Services is staffed by a team of mental health professionals, from various disciplines within the mental health field. At the initial appointment, the student and the counselor decide which resources are currently available at the Center, at other campus offices, and/or in the community that are best suited to help with particular concerns. Services include;
In addition to individual counseling, the Counseling Center offers a number of workshops through the Undergraduate Learning, Training, and Awareness Program (U.L.T.R.A). These are designed to offer support in dealing with difficult issues and explore alternatives to enhance the quality of college life. Topics such as the seven domains of Wellness (physical, emotional, spiritual, occupational, intellectual and social) are addressed in these programs.
The Counseling Process
Counseling is a process which allows a person to explore personal issues, deal with his/her feelings, and consider alternatives in a supportive atmosphere with a professional who will listen and provide feedback. Students sometimes experience problems that make their academic and personal lives at college more difficult than they need to be. Students seek counseling for a variety of reasons. While some students seek help when they are in a state of crisis, it is certainly not necessary to have a serious problem in order to see a counselor. Some students have severe problems, while others just need someone to talk things over. The process may involve only one visit or follow-up sessions. Other students may seek the services of a counselor to discuss a situation which involves the inappropriate behavior of a roommate, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. It is generally accepted that in order for the counseling process to be effective it should be voluntary and initiated by the prospective client. We encourage the Stockton community to make referrals to the Center; however, all appointments must be made by the student.
