Subject: ' probably best described as a historical romance. NOT, however, Harlequin romance....more along the lines of work by Sharon Kay Penman or Marion Zimmer Bradley. The main character is Auriane, a Germanic Tribeswoman, who takes the vow of the warrior after watching her village ransacked and her mother and brother killed. She appeals to a Roman slave to teach her Roman tactics that she may better fight for her cause. Her path leads her eventually to Rome proper, where she becomes involved with Marcus Julianus, a former slave who has risen to the ranks of the Senate, and who is also perceived to be a threat to Nero's rule. The plot twist that brings the two together is a prophecy cast at Auriane's birth, and the fact that both she and Marcus wear identical amulets.' (Lady Jadys) Auriane leads her Chattian tribe against Rome while Marcus Julianus tries to preserve justice under Nero and Domitian before the two meet after Auriane's capture. Adamson/WHF '98
Unique Qualities:
Rating: 'It is a well written saga, and Ms. Gillespie did a wonderful job in researching it.' Lady Jadys (who describes herself as a casual reader, but one who has read this book a number of times)
