STOCKTON’S
ALTERNATE ROUTE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
The Alternate Route Provisional Teacher Certification Program at Stockton is designed to enable individuals who have not completed a traditional teacher education program to enter into the teaching profession in the State of New Jersey. This is an outline of the alternate route program here at Stockton.
A complete checklist for the alternate route candidate follows this document
INITIAL CERTIFICATION
The first step to certification is for the individual to obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY (a CE) from the New Jersey Department of Education. This is a certificate that makes the candidate eligible to be hired.
There are several requirements for the CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY:
· A completed application with the state
· An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
· A minimum grade point average of 2.75
· A passing Praxis II score in the specific area in which the individual wishes to teach
· Completion of the 24-hour precertification class given by Stockton at the ETTC in Mays Landing
Information on this course can be found at the ETTC website: www.ettc.net
HIRING
Once a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY has been issued by the state to the individual, he/she can apply for a job in any public or private school as a first year teacher.
THE FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING
Once hired as a first year teacher with the salary and benefits of a first year teacher, the candidate will be assigned to a training center where he/she will complete a 200-hour instructional training program at night. (This is on-the-job-training and is not eligible for undergraduate or graduate credit.) Meanwhile in the school district, the candidate will be mentored for 34 weeks.
If the alternate route teacher is an elementary teacher or a middle school teacher, he/she will be required to take an additional 90 hours of instruction (45 hours in mathematics and 45 hours in language arts). This was a new October 2009 requirement.
The candidate will be awarded a STANDARD (permanent) TEACHING CERITIFCATE once all components are successfully completed:
· The instructional training program at night
· The classes in math and language arts for elementary and middle school teachers
· The 34 weeks of mentoring by the district
1) Fees for Training Program total are as follows, payable at the beginning of each of the four classes according to the following schedule. DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM
Instructional components provide candidates with educational theory as well as opportunities for hands-on experiences and interactive simulations. In addition, a vital component of the instruction is the support it affords candidates as they carry out their duties as full-time first year classroom teachers. By providing a forum for sharing common concerns and ideas, candidates receive validation and inspiration from instructors as well as other group members.

| GPA Requirements |
The New Jersey Department of Education requires a 2.75 to be admitted into this program. Less than that, but at least a 2.5? There is a Flexibility Rule, but you have to do VERY WELL* on the Praxis II test. [*Very well is defined as 110% of the passing score. For example: if the passing score is 150 for your specific test, then to use the flexibility rule to over-ride a poor GPA, you would need 165 points on the Praxis II. This is the passing score plus 10% more or 150+15= 165.] Your GPA* is the GPA that you had on the day of your graduation from a completed program. You cannot take additional courses after graduation and have those courses bring up your GPA – unless those courses lead to a completed program (a graduate degree program, for example). [*Your GPA is your GPA from a completed degree program. Generally that is your bachelor’s degree, but if you have a completed post-Bac program or a completed master’s program that GPA will count.] |
