Library FAQs

Can I access library databases from off campus?
Yes!   Our library databases are available to Stockton students, faculty and staff -even from off -campus.  Everyone from the Stockton community must use their PORTAL user name and password to log in.  PORTAL numbers are assigned by Computer Services  (tel.  652-4447).

What is the difference between using Google and using the Library resources?
When you use Google or other search engines, you are searching a wide ocean of information. You are spreading your net very widely. Your chances are good for finding something but in the process you will have to cull through a lot of other fish to discard. Much of the information in search engines, like Google has not been reviewed for accuracy.

The library databases offer access to a more focused universe than the World Wide Web. These databases have been reviewed and selected to provide precision, depth and reliability. Material is usually copyrighted and not available elsewhere.

What is the difference between scholarly and popular resources?
When you select articles for research and view full text articles on line you need to make a distinction between scholarly and popular material. Scholarly or academic journals are usually published by a university or institution and contain research or specific information. Popular magazines are usually commercial, written for a general audience and contain current news. They can include secondary commentaries on research.  For more details, see attached chart.

How do I know whether Stockton has a particular journal?
The Stockton  Journal List will give you the titles of the  journals the Library can access both in print and in full -text online.

What do I do if Stockton does not own the journal I need?
First check the Stockton Journal List to be sure Stockton doesn't have the journal . If the library does not own a copy of the journal, you can submit an Interlibrary Loan Request.
