Air Quality

Laboratories with 100% fresh air make-up get 8 to 12 room air changes per hour. Most laboratories in the F-wing and Arts and Science building have 100% fresh air make-up. The fume hoods in these laboratories serve a double function by exhausting the air.

F-002, F-003, F-006, F-007, F-010 and F-012 have 100% fresh air make-up. Roof units also provide 100% fresh air make-up to F-005, F-008 and F-009, through a specially engineered intake and exhaust system.

F-004 and F-004a, F-004b, F-004c, and F-004d are provided with fresh air by the roof units but the exhaust system is limited, as a consequence there is a lower number of room air changes per hour.

A&S 110, 210 and 211 have 100% fresh air make-up and the fume hoods are used for exhaust. A&S 215 has almost 100% fresh air. The Insectary, A&S 214, has 100% fresh air make-up.

All other rooms in the F-wing, B-wing, C-wing and A&S building do not have 100% fresh air make-up and the air changes in these areas is similar to a classroom.

Use of regulated susbstances such as formaldehyde is monitored on personnel potentially exposed to this substance and on samples taken from the air space of specimen containers where formaldehyde might be present. All regulated substances and volatile substances with Threshold Limit Values (TLV) below 50 ppm must be used inside the fume hoods.
