Priorities in coping with emergency situations in the immediate area follow the Emergency Procedures Summary described in the corresponding site.
In the Academic Laboratories and Field Facilities, faculty and staff must try to implement, if at all possible, the Emergency Shutdown Procedure described below.
According to the Stockton College Building Evacuation Procedure No. 6921, upon emergency notification by means of an audible and visible alarm all persons must evacuate the buildings.
The instructor in charge of the class or any other operations taking place at that moment, must follow basic steps for an emergency shutdown. The basic steps outlined below do not include all particular situations found in a teaching/research area but are minimum guidelines to be addressed in case of a sudden evacuation with unknown return time.
A. Stop all activities and experiments inside the fume hood and close the fume hood sashes.
B. Cap all chemical containers.
C. Turn off all electrical devices with exception of those connected to the emergency generator. Refrigerators and freezers doors must be closed.
D. Turn off all gas cylinders at the tank valves with exception of inert gas flow used to purge moisture-sensitive instrumentation or blanketing a reactive compound or mixture.
E. Turn off all Bunsen burners.
F. Vent all containers of cryogenic liquids to prevent buildup of internal pressure.
G. Leave laboratory locked.
