Fume Hoods

- The following rooms in the F-wing  and Arts & Science (A&S)  Building have been equipped with multi-purpose fume hoods whose exhaust fans are operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These fume hoods also serve to exhaust the air in the room: F-002, F-003, F-006, F-007, F-010 and F-012, F-017 Prep Area, A&S 110, A&S 210, A&S 211.

Fume hoods in the F-wing are equipped with electronic safety monitors and can only be used  if a green light is shown in the operating range. The monitor will automatically provide visual (light will turn red) and audible alarms when the performance of the hood is not sufficient to contain the fumes being generated inside. The electronic safety monitor is calibrated to operate safely when the air velocity entering the hood (face velocity) is  approximately 100 feet per minute (fpm) at a sash height of 12 inches. The fume hoods are designed to be used by sliding the horizontal sliding sash. Opening the vertical sash more than 12 inches will trigger the alarm. Only fume hoods in the F-wing are equipped with the sliding horizontal sash.

In the A&S building fume hoods, face velocity is maintained higher than 100 fpm to allow the vertical sash to be fully open maintaining the required face velocity for safe operation. The operator's head must never be placed inside the fume hood. Fume hoods cannot be used if the alarm light is red and is in the audible mode. HVAC personnel must be alerted to correct the malfunction. Chemicals must never be stored inside the fume hood.

- Multi-Purpose fume hoods whose fans must be turned ON before use are placed in the following areas:

F-wing Bio prep Room (no electronic safety monitor)
B-009a, B-016
Teaching Laboratory in Building 501
(Nacote Creek Field Station)

To use the fume hoods their exhaust fan must be turned ON (switch on the right panel). The electronic safety monitor on the right will display face velocity on the screen. Green light must be on NORMAL before using the hood. Never operate fume hood if alarm indicator shows a red light on LOW ALARM or HIGH ALARM. Due to the ON/OFF manual operation of the fan, alarm is MUTE and it will not sound. Chemicals are not to be stored inside the fume hood. Exhaust fan must be turned OFF when the fume hood is not in use.

- A Perchloric Acid Fume Hood has been installed in Building 501 in one of the research areas. This fume hood can only be used for Perchloric Acid procedures.

Exhaust fan must be turned ON (switch on the right panel) before using fume hood. The electronic monitor on the right will display face velocity on the screen. Green light must be on NORMAL before using the hood. Fume hood cannot be operated if alarm indicator shows a red light on LOW ALARM or HIGH ALARM. Due to the ON/OFF manual operation of the exhaust fan, alarm is in MUTE and it will not sound. Exhaust fan must be OFF only if fume is not in use and no chemicals are left inside. The water wash down system (valve on left) must operate for 15 minutes after each use. Exhaust fan must be OFF during the operation of the water wash system. Approximately once a week the interior surfaces of the work area must be cleaned with water.
