Radiation Safety Program

The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued the College a Radioactive Materials License which specifies procurement and possesion limits for radioactive materials.

In addition to the NRC the College must adhere to the State of New Jersey regulations. The rules, guidelines and regulations set forth by the aforementioned regulatory agencies should be considered as minimum safety requirements. All persons using radiation sources must be familiar with Parts 10 and 20 in 10 CFR Ch.1 and the college's Radiation Safety Program and Appendices.

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) has the responsibility to maintain a radiation safe environment at the College, instruct authorized personnel on safe working practices, conduct surveys of designated areas, coordinate waste disposal procedures, maintain inventory of all radioactive materials within limits established by the License revising it as needed.

Licensees, as authorized by the License, must be a permanent member of the College faculty or staff. They can personaly supervise the use of radioisotopes by individuals not registered in the license. All activities must be conducted in designated areas which are periodically inspected by the RSO.
