Stockton presents at the 2015 NJEDge Faculty Showcase

Dr. Douglas Harvey, Dr. Tina Zappile, & Dr. Amy Ackerman pose for a photo after their ignite session at NJEdge.

Members of Stockton's faculty and staff presented at the 2015 NJEdge Faculty showcase at New Jersey City University on March 13th.

Dr. Tina Zappile, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. Douglas Harvey, Associate Professor of Instructional Technology, and Dr. Amy Ackerman, Associate Professor of Instructional Technology, held an Ignite presentation at the conference to showcase the achievements of several key learning outcomes related to Stockton's "Go Global!" Online Summer Program. Designed for incoming first year students using the AASCU Global Challenges curriculum, the "Go Global!" program is part of strategy to retain incoming first year students by introducing them to a series of global challenges and essential learning outcomes through the use of technology.

Also presenting at the conference were Dr. Linda Feeney, Director of E-Learning, Dennis Fotia, Assistant Director of E-Learning, and David Lechner, Distance Education Librarian.

Dennis Fotia, David Lechner, & Dr. Linda Feeney

Their breakout session "From Pulp to Pixels: A Case Study of Digitizing a Paper Assessment Process", detailed the results of a paper to online conversion process that aimed to promote sustainability, reduce costs, improve student mastery, and leverage technology to enhance instructional effectiveness. The Bjork Library at Stockton University had utilized a paper workbook for library instruction since 1986. In Summer 2014, this workbook was converted to electronic format using the College’s Blackboard learning management system.

Congratulations to all our Stockton presenters.

Dr. Rogers Barlatt preserves his course for future instructors

Dr. Rogers Barlatt

Dr. Rogers Barlatt, Professor of Chemistry, has been teaching "Black Scientists and Inventors" as a face to face course for nearly 30 years.

Retiring from Stockton this semester, Rogers and his colleagues in the Africana Studies Program wanted to ensure that this course could be taught to Stockton students well into the future.

The course examines the achievements of past African-American scientists and inventors and the role they played in building America's technological base.  It provides students with insight as to how these scientists and inventors accomplished these tasks in spite of an enormous array of social and cultural forces against them.

As Rogers explained, "I have amassed lots of teaching materials and literature which I wanted to archive in a format that would be most useful for another instructor."

Rogers used Blackboard to archive a wealth of material for future instructors of his course.

Working with Linda Feeney, Director of E-Learning, Rogers moved his course into the Blackboard Learning Management system. Along with a wealth of instructor resources, Rogers also created sample quizzes and tests to ensure that this course can be offered not only as a face to face class but also as a hybrid or an online course.

When asked about the outcome of the course conversion, Rogers stated that "the result is far beyond my expectations."

ITEE Grants Awarded for 2015

The Integrating Technology and Engagement through E-Learning (ITEE) grant program provides support for faculty who wish to pursue opportunities to use technology to further engage their students in the learning process. The program funds proposals that support the integration of technology and pedagogy via projects which demonstrate measurable student learning outcomes. Please see below for this year's applicants awards and a brief description of their project proposals:

Dr. Douglas Harvey & Dr. Tina Zappile
Create and enhance course content using GoPro Hero cameras to record video interviews with faculty and staff who represent the range of global perspectives on issues covered in the Go Global! online summer course.

Dr. Elaine Bukowski, Dr. Arnaldo Cordero-Román, & JY Zhou
Collaboration and attendance of the Cultures and Language Across the Curriculum (CLAC) 2015 Conference held at Denison University.

Dr. Susan Cydis
Using iPad applications to collect and utilize data to assess student needs and develop a plan for remediating reading difficulties in a field-based clinical environment.

Dr. Kathleen Klein & Dr. Kelly Dougherty
Use of an iPad and Articulate Storyline to capture human movement and support specific student learning needs related to functional anatomy concepts and human movement analysis.

Dr. Lauren DelRossi
Expanding student competency in the use of the iPad for administrating educational interventions related to physical therapy treatment of pediatric patients with orthopedic and neurological considerations.

Dr. Nazia Kazi
Use of an iPad and the Doceri photographic annotation app to visually demonstrate how changing facets of a "built environment" on campus would drastically change the experience of college students and help explain the key concept of Panopticism.

Congratulations to this year's ITEE grant award recipients. The E-learning Office would also like to thank the ITEE committee members for their work in the selection process. The results of each proposal will be presented at the 2015 Day of Scholarship in the Fall. For more information about the ITEE program please visit the E-Learning website.

Stockton's Study Abroad Program creates online orientation

Natalja Manger,
Study Abroad Advisor, narrates the complete video orientation.

This past winter, The Office of Global Engagement worked with the Office of E-Learning to produce a video orientation for the University's Study Abroad program. Titled "Study Abroad 101", the orientation video which is available in single or segmented viewing options, serves to introduce students to the various aspects of the Study Abroad process.

Natalja Manger, Study Abroad Adviser, presents and narrates the entire video orientation. Additional videos which walk students through viewing their CAPP & Course Selection as it relates to the Study Abroad program were also created.

For more information about the Study Abroad program and to view their online orientation, please visit the Study Abroad website.
