Stockton encourages Faculty and Staff to participate in an Accessible Course Design MOOC.

View a brief introduction video for the Access MOOC

In February, SUNY Empire State is sponsoring a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) titled “Accessibility: Designing and Teaching Courses for All Learners”. This is a free 6-week professional development course that will help participants gain a better understanding of accessibility as a civil rights issue and develop the knowledge and skills needed to design learning experiences that promote inclusive learning environments.

During this six-week course, participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize and address challenges faced by students with disabilities related to access, success, and completion
  • Articulate faculty and staff roles in reducing barriers for students with disabilities
  • Apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in designing accessible learning experiences
  • Analyze the benefits of Backward Design when developing learning experiences
  • Use Section 508 standards and WCAG 2.0 guidelines to create accessible courses
  • Determine which tools and techniques are appropriate based on course content

Anyone may enroll and participate in the MOOC. It has been designed for faculty and staff in higher education at any type or level of institution.

Access MOOC begins on February 22nd. Those interested in attending can:

  1. Register for the course at the Canvas Network
  2. Share and follow the conversation on Twitter using #AccessMOOC
  3. Follow the Access MOOC Facebook Page

Stockton University will supplement this online course with on campus meetings to discuss concepts and methods for using local resources. We hope that you will join us in taking advantage of this timely opportunity.

E-Learning offers links to tools and resources to support Accessibility needs.

The Office of E-Learning in cooperation with the Learning Access Program (LAP) offers a list of resources that can serve as a starting point for instructors working to make their course content more accessible for students.

From a teaching and learning perspective, disabilities can be divided into four major categories: vision, hearing, physical mobility, and cognition. Many students with accessibility challenges have already been working with tools that support their learning. However, adjustments may be needed to materials that you include in or create for your courses.

E-Learning offers links to various accessibility resources such as a color blindness simulator, transcriptions tools for audio and video, as well as accommodation strategy guides for college students with disabilities.

Any student requiring an accommodation should start with the Learning Access program. A wide variety of resources are available through LAP.

Together the student and LAP will develop a set of reasonable accommodations that address the student’s learning and physical access needs. After the plan is developed, the student is responsible for notifying his/her instructors in a timely manner.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Learning Access Program (J-204, 609-652-4988) and the Office of E-Learning (K-206, 609-626-3479) for assistance.

Stockton Staff & Faculty present at NJEDge annual conference.

Dr.Arnaldo Cordero-Roman, Dr. Elaine Bukowski & Dr. Linda Feeney present at the poster session.

Members of Stockton's faculty and staff presented at the NJEDge annual conference in Princeton, New Jersey on November 19th & 20th.

Dr. Elaine Bukowski, Professor of Physical Therapy, Dr.Arnaldo Cordero-Roman, Associate Professor of Spanish, Dr. Linda Feeney, Director of E-Learning, and JY Zhou, Internationalization Specialist, held an Ignite presentation & Poster session titled "Fusing Academic and Cultural Competency from the Classroom to the Community: E-merging Language Acquisition and Physical Therapy."

Their presentation demonstrated Stockton's promotion and sustainability of a real life communicative approach, via social interaction, multidisciplinary, and cross curricular endeavors with students, staff, administrators and faculty while integrating technology and engagement through E-learning.

Dr. Lauren Del Rossi & Tucker Rowlinson present at the conference.

Dr. Lauren Del Rossi, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy presented a breakout session titled, "Assessment of Patient-Interview Skills in DPT Students Utilizing Point-Of-View Video Recordings: A Pilot Study." This session reported on the findings of a study to determine the effects of point- of- view (POV) video recordings on student physical therapists’ (SPT) ability to refine patient communication skills.

Tucker Rowlinson, Assistant Instructional Designer at Stockton led a poster session titled "Green Screen Challenges". This poster session focused on the challenges and solutions to filming or photographing in front of a green screen, a process which allows the background of a video or photo to be replaced with any image, video, or color backdrop.

Also presenting at the conference were Robert Heinrich, Chief Information Officer, Demetrious Roubos, Assistant Director of Information System & Security Administration, Brian Cole, Software Development Specialist, and Spencer Sharkey, Student Worker.

A screenshot of Computer Service's Integrated Management System (IMS).

Their breakout session titled, "The Integrated Management System: A Grass Roots Solution to Enterprise AV/IT Management", detailed the development of Stockton's home grown Integrated Management System (IMS). The system is a support tool designed to manage and control a variety of Stockton's systems including help-desk ticketing, hardware and software requests and inventory, and also provides remote control to computers across Stockton’s campuses. In addition to the integrative feature-set, IMS also produces a variety of statistics, allowing Stockton to track a number of metrics related to call-volume, server / workstation compliance, and property transfers.

Congratulations to all our Stockton presenters.

Faculty wishing to showcase their technology-mediated instruction are encouraged to submit a proposal to the NJEDge Faculty Showcase 2016 being held on March 23rd in Hoboken, NJ. Proposals for the showcase are due by February 5th.
