Sal Pistone
Liz Stankiewicz

A pair of Richard Stockton players were rewarded for their efforts with NJAC weekly honors. Senior back Sal Pistone (Blackwood/Highland) was named NJAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman goalkeeper Liz Stankiewicz (Freehold Twp./Freehold Twp.) was chosen NJAC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week.

Pistone helped the Ospreys to a pair of shutout victories in the Stockton Seashore Classic at G. Larry James Stadium. The senior started both games and initiated the decisive play in a 1-0 victory over Johns Hopkins.

After helping Stockton to a 5-0 domination of John Jay on September 9, Pistone assisted on the game-winning goal against the Blue Jays the next day by lofting a free kick into the box, where Pat Langan (Hazlet/Raritan) scored the only goal of the match.

Pistone is tied for second on the team in scoring with four points on a goal and two assists. A 2009 NJAC Honorable Mention selection, he has played in 66 career games and started 52 matches. Pistone and the Ospreys are off to a 4-1 start this season, including a three-game winning streak. Stockton will host NYU on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Stankiewicz backstopped Stockton to one-goal victories in both of its outings last week. The rookie goalie made two saves in a 4-3 victory at Swarthmore on September 7. Stankiewicz then kicked out eight shots as the Ospreys edged Stevenson 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. The triumph improved Stockton to 3-1 this year and equaled the team’s win total from the entire 2010 season.

Stankiewicz emerged from a four-way competition for the starting goalie position that took place in preseason. The freshman has started all four games, posting a 3-1 record with 19 saves and a 2.36 goals against average. Stankiewicz and the Ospreys will begin NJAC play with a road game at 15th-ranked Rowan tomorrow at 7 p.m.
