Dry chemical ABC fire extinguishers contain mono ammonium phosphate as the principal ingredient, which melts at 350° F forming a coating on the combustible surface, including wood or paper.

The A rating is a water equivalency rating. Each A is equivalent to 1 ¼ gallons of water, so 4A = 5 gal.

The BC rating is equivalent to the amount of square footage that the extinguisher can cover when handled by a professional, so 10BC = 10 sq ft.
